Using a bed frame is good for people, for mattresses, and for everyone who is in the bedroom. Is it OK to put a mattress on the floor? Despite the apparent ease of putting your mattress on the floor, there are many reasons to keep your bed frame! This is because a bed frame is not simply a statement piece. Using a bed frame is good for people, for mattresses, and for everyone who is in the bedroom.

Is it OK to put a mattress on the floor?

Extras for Any Bed

Whether you frame your bed or not, there are some things that every mattress should have.

The first one is a mattress protector. These pieces help increase the life of the product, as well as your investment. Instead of removing the mattress, just remove the mattress protector.

A more optional but still important component to consider is a foam mat for underneath the mattress. This helps to give a soft mattress foundation, that works in conjunction with a box spring to give people with back problems a soft comfort, giving pressure relief.

Alternatives

Now, frames are not the best for temporary situations, or for space-limited ones. But a mattress on the floor is not the right solution for either. For temporary situations use a sleeping bag or look for air mattresses. Air mattresses are convenient for spending time on the floor regularly. They are more bug and dust resistant, and can easily be blown up with a manual or electric pump.

For tight areas look for folding mattresses or rollup mattresses. But do not put a mattress directly on the floor.

Conclusion

So, whatever your sleep setup may be, the best answer is a frame of some kind. It keeps you completely dry, offers sturdy support, and stops nasties like bugs and bacteria from living in your bed. A bed frame makes all the difference.

The last few years have brought such a huge increase in orders for Tatami and other types of Japanese platform beds that we have devoted a lot of time and attention to how to best build these beds. This blog will dig into what we’ve learned about the Tatami beds that customers love. Tatami mat vs. Tatami platform bed frame What is a Tatami mat? A Tatami mat is a Japanese style of sleeping floor mat for adults and children alike. The best Japanese style Tatami mats are made from Rush Grass woven around a baked Rice Hull core. The green hue you see in some of our photos is a reflection of this grass construction. When following tradition, Tatami mats are between 55mm or 60mm – about 2.2 to 2.4 – inches thick. Modern Tatami mats are made from a variety of different materials that can vary in thickness from 1 inch to 3 inches thick. Many of these mats have a solid synthetic cover that has a more neutral gray to yellow color tone. Traditionally used directly on the ground or floor in bedrooms, Tatami mats are not soft! A quality Tatami is very firm and sturdy and while they provide little to no cushion for the sleeper, some people find a great deal of benefit in the way they provide strong support to the neck and back during the night. Tatami mats provide very firm, some would say downright hard, support and are probably the opposite of modern day memory foam mattresses! The advantage to using a complete platform bed set is that is that the bed frame defines the space, keeps the mat up off the floor, and helps ensure that the bed is clean and free of dirt while also discouraging people and pets from walking on it. The 1 to 2 inch gap between the wooden slats of a Tatami platform bed facilitate good air circulation keeping your bed clean and fresh. Most of the platform beds that you see on our website can be ordered for use with a Tatami mat. Can you put a Tatami mat on any bed? Many bed frames look like they could easily accommodate a Tatami, but before you make a purchase, there are several important factors to consider. For best results its best to find a low bed frame that is specifically constructed and designed for this special type of mat. Tatami mats need a firm foundation To properly support a tatami mat, a bed or tatami frame foundation surface should consist of wooden slats spaced 1 to 2 inches apart consistently across the full platform bed and ground surface. Because the Tatami has very little structural rigidity of its own, its important that the foundation be very flat with no low spots or bumps. remember they were originally designed to be used on the floor. Many of our customers report a dramatic improvement in health after switching to sleeping on a Tatami platform bed. While the rigid surface is not for everyone, many people tell us that changing over to a Tatami platform bed yields a much improved sleep experience. A Tatami mat is made from natural materials Traditional Japanese Tatami mats are made from natural materials such as rice straw, rice hulls and rush grass. Advocates of this traditional construction method point out that these materials are inherently hypoallergenic, helping to reduce dust mites and other allergens in the bedroom. Tatami platform beds can be low VOC. If you are sensitive to the chemicals used in modern day latex and memory foam mattresses, a Tamami can dramatically reduce the off gassing of toxic fumes in your bedroom. The last few years have brought such a huge increase in orders for Tatami and other types of Japanese platform beds that we have devoted a lot of time and attention to how to best build these beds. This blog will dig into what we’ve learned about the Tatami beds that customers love.

What is a Tatami mat?

A Tatami mat is a Japanese style of sleeping floor mat for adults and children alike. The best Japanese style Tatami mats are made from Rush Grass woven around a baked Rice Hull core. The green hue you see in some of our photos is a reflection of this grass construction. When following tradition, Tatami mats are between 55mm or 60mm – about 2.2 to 2.4 – inches thick.

Modern Tatami mats are made from a variety of different materials that can vary in thickness from 1 inch to 3 inches thick. Many of these mats have a solid synthetic cover that has a more neutral gray to yellow color tone.

Traditionally used directly on the ground or floor in bedrooms, Tatami mats are not soft! A quality Tatami is very firm and sturdy and while they provide little to no cushion for the sleeper, some people find a great deal of benefit in the way they provide strong support to the neck and back during the night. Tatami mats provide very firm, some would say downright hard, support and are probably the opposite of modern day memory foam mattresses!

Tatami bed frame

A Tatami platform bed is a type of platform bed frame that is specifically designed to support a Tatami mat. The advantage to using a complete platform bed set is that is that the bed frame defines the space, keeps the mat up off the floor, and helps ensure that the bed is clean and free of dirt while also discouraging people and pets from walking on it.

The 1 to 2 inch gap between the wooden slats of a Tatami platform bed facilitate good air circulation keeping your bed clean and fresh. Most of the platform beds that you see on our website can be ordered for use with a Tatami mat.

Can you put a Tatami mat on any bed?

Many bed frames look like they could easily accommodate a Tatami, but before you make a purchase, there are several important factors to consider. For best results its best to find a low bed frame that is specifically constructed and designed for this special type of mat.

Tatami mats need a firm foundation

To properly support a tatami mat, a bed or tatami frame foundation surface should consist of wooden slats spaced 1 to 2 inches apart consistently across the full platform bed and ground surface. Because the Tatami has very little structural rigidity of its own, its important that the foundation be very flat with no low spots or bumps. remember they were originally designed to be used on the floor.

Not all bed frames will accommodate a low profile mat

Next, make sure you have a sturdy platform bed frame – a box spring is simply not supportive enough for a tatami mat.

Finally, check that your bed platform will fit the mat and that no high edges or “lips” made it hard to get into bed. Many beds that are designed for a standard American mattress have trim or edge that is designed to hold a tall mattress in place, and would not interfere with a thick mattress but could cause problems for a thin Tatami.

Is it healthy to sleep on a tatami?

Yes! Many of our customers report a dramatic improvement in health after switching to sleeping on a Tatami platform bed. While the rigid surface is not for everyone, many people tell us that changing over to a Tatami platform bed yields a much improved sleep experience.

A Tatami mat is made from natural materials

Traditional Japanese Tatami mats are made from natural materials such as rice straw, rice hulls and rush grass. Advocates of this traditional construction method point out that these materials are inherently hypoallergenic, helping to reduce dust mites and other allergens in the bedroom.

Tatami platform beds can be low VOC.

If you are sensitive to the chemicals used in modern day latex and memory foam mattresses, a Tamami can dramatically reduce the off gassing of toxic fumes in your bedroom.

There is no cotton, wool or metal in a Tatami mat. Combining a mat with a quality hardwood Tatami bed frame that does not use particle board or plywood will create a bed system with very low chemical off gas for a low VOC sleeping setup.

Please note that a new Tatami mat has a distinctive soft rush smell that many people find peaceful and relaxing, especially at bedtime. However if you are extremely sensitive to smell, please plan ahead. The smell does dissipate over time.

Tatami platform beds can reduce back pain and improve posture

Many people tell us that sleeping on the solid, flat surface of a tatami mat allows their legs and spine to settle into a natural position resulting in reduction of back pain during the night and a less sore body when its time to get up. This neutral sleeping position also helps to improve posture and inspires deeper sleep.

Are Tatami mats hard to sleep on?

Sleep comfort is generally a very personal choice and we encourage you to try and many bed frame and mattress styles as possible before making a purchase.

Sleep experts say that it takes time for your body to become accustomed to sleeping on a solid surface. A lot of people will find a Tatami uncomfortable for the first few days or weeks, but given time find that they sleep far better than on a regular mattress. Everyone is different and there is no set time frame for getting used to sleeping on a Tatami mat.

Because of the rigid top surface, a user does not sink into the top of a Tatami in the same way as a thicker, softer mattress. This can be very good for back sleepers and some side sleepers, but if you prefer a softer or more cushy surface you may prefer another type of Japanese mattress such as a a Futon mattress or Shikibuton, which we cover in our blog “What are Japanese platform beds called?”

Why don’t platform beds need box springs?

Before we dive into mattress thickness, lets talk about platform beds vs box springs.

A platform bed is a type of bed that eliminates the need for a traditional box spring and replaces it with wooden slats as the mattress base. Any thickness of mattress can be placed on a platform base, from a low profile 8 inch mattress to a 20 inch or larger luxury memory foam mattress.

A lot of people ask: “can you put a regular mattress on a platform bed with slats?” Even though its not needed, a box spring can in fact be placed on a platform base if desired. Just keep in mind that the addition of the box spring base layer will significantly change the height of your bed!

The best platform bed mattress thickness

The best mattresses for platform beds is 12 inches thick, but even thicker – at 14 to 20 inches – can be even better.

Although many of these types of beds were originally designed to be used on the floor, the addition of a simple, low profile platform bed frame can make the sleeping position on the bed more comfortable, stylish and hygienic.

Consider your nightstands

The ideal height for the top of a nightstand or bedside table is 2 to 4 inches from the top of the bed. If the top of a nightstand is significantly lower than the mattress it can be difficult for the sleeper to reach items placed on the table surface while laying in bed. A higher table surface is less problematic – but if you choose a low profile mattresses and low bed, a traditional nightstand will likely be too high.

In this example, we worked with a customer to place the built in nightstands at the same height as the top of the mattress – a perfect fit.

What kind of mattress goes on a platform bed?

Will a platform bed make my mattress firmer?

A platform bed does not change the firmness or comfort level of most modern mattress types such as memory foam, poly foam, latex foam and hybrid mattresses.

Innerspring mattresses designed to be used with a box spring can sometimes be made firmer when used on a platform bed. If you are currently using a box spring base and want to test if your mattress will be made firmer by a platform bed, we suggest that you try out putting your mattress on the floor. While its not a good idea to use your mattress on the floor in the long term, this short term test will help you judge how firm your innerspring mattress will be on a platform bed.

Best platform bed for hybrid mattress

A hybrid mattress combines several layers of high tech latex and memory foam with traditional innerspring coils to give the the benefits of comfort layers of both. Hybrid mattresses such as Wink and Leesa are also known as a “bed in a box” as they ship direct to the buyer in a compact shipping carton.

It’s the #1 question we get from customers – can I use my existing mattress with your new platform bed frame or do I also need to invest in a new mattress?

Yes! Most of the time the mattress you have now will work perfectly with your new platform bed. The strong wood slats of a platform bed frame provide idea support for most mattresses – just about any type of mattress – and keep the mattress warranty intact.

The #2 question we hear about platform beds is:

Do I need a Box Spring for my new platform bed frame?

One of the main benefits of a platform bed frame with wooden slats, is that it does not require a box spring. In fact the “platform” in platform bed refers to the wood slats that serve as the mattress foundation.

Still, the question of what kind of mattress foundation is used on what kind of bed can be confusing and can be made even more complicated by different terms used in the bed and mattress industry. Let’s jump into some bed basics to cut through the clutter of bed frames and mattress foundations.

Does a box spring make a difference for a mattress?

According to many experts, including the folks over at Popular Mechanics, “Traditional bed frames with box springs are no longer necessary to provide your mattress with firm support to extend its life.”

However, if you plan to use an existing innerspring mattress, we suggest that you try it with and without box springs before you make your final decision on which style of bed to purchase. Depending on the exact type and age of your most traditional innerspring mattress that you have it may have been designed specifically to be used with a box spring. The easiest to way to learn how innerspring mattresses -or any other type – will feel on a platform bed is to try it on the floor and then try it with a box spring. This test will be a close approximation of how the two bed types will feel when in use.

Do I need a Bunkie Board with a platform bed or box spring bed?

A Bunkie Board is a flat board, typically a piece of plywood or particle board 1 inch to 3 inches in thickness, that is intended to be placed between a bed foundation and the mattress to give additional support. It can be used with any type of bed if extra firm support is required.

If you have a well built platform bed, a Bunkie Board is most likely not required. If you have an older, sagging box spring bed with extra support, an innerspring mattress, or a Platform Bed without enough slats, a Bunkie Board might provide the enhanced support you need.

Can I put a Tatami mat on my bed?

You can put a Tatami on a most platform bed frames but make sure the bed surface foundation provides strong support for the mat. Because the mat itself is not rigid, Tatami beds must have a firm, flat base platform to support the mat and in turn the sleepers. A Tatami cannot be used with a box spring.

 

Can you put two mattresses on a platform bed?

A platform bed base will support two mattresses in a side-by-side configuration if they are the same length, width and thickness. For example, two side-by-side Twin-XL mattresses, typically 80 inches long and 38 inches wide, will be the same dimension as a single Eastern King mattress at 80 inches long and 76 inches wide. Just make sure that the thickness is the same for both mattresses!

Some customers also ask if their new platform bed frame will support two stacked mattresses. While it might be better to ask the Princess and The Pea if this increases the bed’s comfort, there is certainly no reason you can’t try! Just double check that your particular bed is rated for the overall weight of the two mattresses and sleepers.

Can I put an air mattress on a platform bed frame?

Air mattresses have come a long way in recent years, evolving from basic camping gear to comfortable sleep solutions that can rival traditional mattresses. When it comes to using an air mattress on a platform bed frame, there are several key factors to consider.

Soooo, can you put a regular mattress on a platform bed with slats?

Very popular with Mid Century Modern, Minimalist and Asian-inspired design trends, low profile beds give you all the benefits of a Platform Bed but are lower to the ground.

    • Low profile beds are a much better choice vs. putting your mattress on the floor as they keep dirt and dust away from the bed surface and improve healthy airflow to both the bed and sleepers.
    • Low Platform Beds are very popular with parents of small children as the sleeping surface is low to the ground and is a low risk for a child learning to sleep in a “big person bed.”
    • The primary downside to the a low Platform Bed is that the sleeping surface is low to the ground and difficult for some people to get in and out of. If you prefer a more standard finished bed height of 20 to 25 inches, please consider a standard height platform bed.

Japanese platform beds, also known as Tatami beds, Futons or Shikibuton, are known for their simplicity, minimalist design and the use of natural hardwood. In response to this demand we designed a series of sturdy, solid wood bed frames with clean Japanese inspired lines that feature low VOC Tung Oil finish and easy assembly. This article will share what we’ve learned after designing and building hundreds of custom Japanese style bed frames, including our take on the best designs, mattress types, and ways to use Japanese furniture in any bedroom décor. Tatami beds Japanese platform beds are often called a Tatami bed because they provide a platform bed frame for a traditional Japanese Tatami mat. A Tatami mat is a Japanese style of low-profile bedding traditionally made from Rush Grass woven around a Rice Hull core. Modern Tatami mats are made from a variety of different materials that can vary in thickness from 1 inch to 3 inches thick. Tatami mats are very firm and provide little to no cushion for the sleeper. While traditionally used on the floor, Tatami Mats are also often used in a platform bed frame to raise the mat up off the floor, keeping the bed clean and organized. You can put a Tatami on a most platform bed frames but make sure the bed surface foundation provides strong support for the mat. Because the mat itself is not rigid, Tatami beds must have a firm, flat base platform to support the mat and in turn the sleepers. Also make sure that your bed frame will accommodate the thin profile of the mat as many beds designed for a standard American mattress have a lip or trim that would not interfere with a thick mattress but could cause problems for a thin Tatami. Tatami Beds

Japanese Platform Beds are most often called a Tatami Bed because they provide a platform bed frame for a traditional Japanese Tatami Mat.

A Tatami Mat is a Japanese style of low-profile bedding traditionally made from Rush Grass woven around a Rice Hull core. Today Tatami Mats are made from a variety of different materials that can vary in thickness from very thin to several inches thick. Tatami Mats are very firm and provide little to no cushion for the sleeper. While traditionally used on the floor Tatami Mats are also often used in a platform bed frame to raise the mat up off the floor, keeping the bed clean and organized.

Tatami Mats can be used with all heights of Platform Beds if the bed provides a supportive surface for the mat. Because the Mat itself is not rigid, Tatami beds must have a strong, flat base platform to support the Mat and in turn the sleepers.

Most often Tatami Mats are used with low platform beds without legs that are 6-12 inches to the floor for a traditional look.

Japanese Futons

A Japanese Futon, also known as a Japanese Floor Mattress, is thicker and softer than a Tatami Mat – often 12-18 inches thick. Traditionally filled with straw, modern Futons are filled with cotton, latex or other soft padding materials. The best Japanese Futons will be made from natural, organic materials that keep them both comfortable and lightweight.

A Futon is softer and thicker that a Tatami Mat, while still much firmer than a traditional American Mattress.
