But what is the purpose of a headboard and footboard? Where does the headboard come from and why was it made? The headboard was invented in ancient Egypt and was later adopted by the Greeks. In ancient times people got really annoyed when their pillow (or rock) fell down the crack between the head of their bed and the wall. This was unacceptable: how could a self respecting Egyptian farmer expect to get a solid eight hours with his rock escaping from under his head all night? So they decided to invent a device that would contain the items on their bed: and thus the headboard was invented.

The same happened with the footboard: have you ever had your sheets come un-tucked at the end of your bed, causing you to experience the un-wholesome sensation of cold toes? As it turns out, the ancients had an equal dislike for this phenomena, and so they invented a piece of furniture to protect the foot of the bed: and thus the footboard was invented.

King Bookcase Headboard

But what about a bookcase headboard in a king bed? The larger the bed, the larger the bookcase headboard can be, so a bookcase headboard in a king bed offers a larger storage space built right into the bed. A king size bookcase headboard with sliding doors offers this same functionality but with the added benefit of doors to protect and close the bookshelves. The Tallboy, as the story goes, gets it’s name from the Old English word tallboi, which means “chest-on-chest” or one chest of drawers on top of another. In fact, many early examples of Tallboy dressers look just like that – two dressers stacked on top of each other.

Over the course of history as the concept evolved and furniture craftsmanship became more refined, the shape of the Tallboy dresser got increasingly more smart and elegant. In modern times it’s narrow drawers stack themselves high and rest not on the floor but upon four legs. This gives the whole piece a slim, up-off-the-ground feel, and packs a punch of storage space in minimal square feet – a real boon for the small room.

What is Tallboy furniture?

A Tallboy is a tall, narrow dresser with a single column of four or more drawers. In essence, with the Tallboy, you’re getting two sets of drawers on one four-legged stand. The two “sets” can be all the same width, or the top “set” can be slightly narrower than the bottom, giving the piece some interest and movement of shape.

Historically, the Tallboy has always been made of high-quality hardwoods (Walnut or Oak, for example) which means it can be a hardworking piece of furniture that lasts generations. The Tallboy may also have lovely little finishing touches like turned legs, carved details, intricate hardware, or keyholes.

The Tallboy (related to the Highboy – also a tall, slender stack of drawers on legs) gently morphed its way through the 17th and 18th centuries and into Colonial America, beginning as a legged or standing chest of drawers with a wardrobe cupboard on top and evolving into the drawers-only piece we know today.

The lower section may feature larger drawers or a cupboard. Highboy dressers often have a more traditional or ornate appearance compared to Tallboys.

If you follow Solid Custom Heirlooms on Instagram or Facebook, you know that we specialize in custom storage beds – from our super popular king and queen bed with storage underneath, to our massive Captains Bed, all the way down to smaller twin beds with drawers.

But what if you have a small bedroom and are looking for the best way to maximize your space? Are there options other than a traditional bed, nightstand and dresser combination? After more than 10 years building custom furniture, we have helped many customers come up with creative solutions for this common dilemma.

We think the best storage beds for small spaces not only keep your bedroom organized but eliminate the need for other storage pieces such as a dresser or chest of drawers. To maximize your bed space in a small room, make sure that your bed frame includes drawers, shelves or cubbies. A well thought out storage bed not only makes a small room feel larger, but can keep your belongings clean, organized and easy to access.

Two sided storage beds

The most common type of small-space storage bed features drawers that slide out from the side of the bed. Depending on your nightstand preferences, the drawers underneath the mattress can go all the way to the headboard or leave space for a nightstand or bedside table. We also offer beds with built in nightstands that allow the storage drawers to open underneath.

One sided storage beds

If you don’t have space in your bedroom for a King or Queen bed, a Full size or Twin size storage bed maybe be a better fit. These sizes typically have 3-4 drawers only on one side which makes them a natural fit to push up against a wall or tuck into a corner. We also make beds with multiple rows of drawers, which increase the height of the bed platform but also increase the storage! As you can see here, the sky is the limit!

Footboard drawer beds

If you have a long, narrow room that does not have adequate space for platform bed with drawers that slide out from the side of the bed, take a look at beds with storage compartments at the foot of the bed. Customers tell us the long, deep drawers are a perfect place for extra bedding, out of season clothes, and can be a great place to organize pairs of shoes.

Corner storage beds

We built out first storage bed designed specifically to be used in a bedroom corner at the request of an interior designer client, and quickly realized the incredible functionality of this type of bed. As you can see here, this bed has two drawers on the side and two at the foot, making it a perfect fit for a corner. In this case, eliminating the headboard allows the bed to have the smallest possible footprint. The wall behind the bed will be used as a backdrop for pillows.

Loft storage bed

Is it a loft bed with drawers? A tall storage bed? Or a chest of drawers with a bed on top? Whatever you call it, this bed is designed to get your bedroom organized! Can also be built with 3, 6 or 9 drawers.

Headboards in small bedrooms

Does a headboard fit in a small bedroom?

A low profile headboard typically adds 4 to 8 inches of length to a bed frame. If you have this space available in your room, a headboard can be a beautiful addition and provide clean definition to your sleeping area. If you have a small bedroom with a short ceiling, a low headboard is best. If you have a small room with a tall ceiling, a high headboard can be a dramatic statement.

Don’t worry if you don’t have space in your bedroom to include a headboard! Pushing your bed against the wall or in a corner not only saves space but lets the wall support your pillows. Many customers also add a small ledge style shelf attached to the wall above to bed to add storage for small items and décor.

Many people have found that a bedside table is an ideal spot to store bedtime items, such as a lamp or alarm clock. What are bedside tables called?

But what do you call a bedside table with drawers? Is it a nightstand, an end table or a side table? Here at Solid Custom Heirlooms, we have found that all these terms can refer to the same thing. Call it a nightstand, night table, bedside table, daystand or bedside table – you name it, we will build it for you, whatever of these options you choose! What matters to naming conventions is the location of the furniture piece.

Almost everyone needs a bedside table. Unless if you have a loft bed or bunk bed in which you sleep on top, you should have a bedside table. If you do have a loft bed or bunk bed then other arrangements can be made for bedtime storage. But if you have a standard platform bed design then a bedside table will be great for you!

Bedside table height

A common question is “what height should bedside tables be?” Is there a correct height for bedside tables? Many sleeper’s preferred bedside table height is 2″ to 4″ within the height of the top of the mattress. This is close enough to be within comfortable reach of the sleeper, and is an ideal for side tables height. Most people find that a higher bedside table is best, while some find that a lower one best suits their needs. It is up to personal preference.

A bedside table with drawer is one of the options that people love when it comes to bedside storage. Many people, myself included, spent the first few years of our lives on a twin size trundle bed. Trundle beds are often bought by growing families in order to save space as their young families expand. One of the consequences of this is that many adults think that trundle beds are childish, because they are often used by children. However, this is simply untrue and hides the wide benefits of this design for both adults and kids.

What is the Point of a Trundle Bed?

No matter if they are used by children or adults, the purpose of a trundle bed is to save space by hiding a second mattress in a large “trundle drawer” under an upper platform bed frame. When the lower bed is needed it slides out for use, and then can be quickly put away in the morning. A pull out trundle bed frame is a simple design that hides has a second bed under the primary sleeping surface. When the trundle drawer is pulled out the second bed is at a lower level than the primary bed. Most often used for guests, this design is also popular with parents teaching their children to sleep in a “big kid bed.”

A pop up trundle bed frame is like a pull out, but includes a mechanism that raises the second mattress to the same height as the first, providing the option of two small beds, two twin size mattresses or one large bed.

Can adults sleep on trundle beds?

Trundle beds are great for adults because of their fluid dimensions. Their dimensions are flexible enough to accommodate the tallest or shortest customer, while the extra sleeping space is great for multiple sleepers.

Trundle Beds for Couples

One of the things that keeps couples from considering a trundle bed is that they think of pull out trundle beds only. However, with a pop up trundle bed, both bed surfaces can be at the same level and create a standard size queen or king bed. If you have a very small space, a pop up trundle bed can provide a comfortable bed at night while only taking up the space of a twin bed during the day.

How does a Pop Up Trundle Work?

A pop up trundle features a lifting mechanism that raises the platform to the same height as the main one. The lifting up motion is what locks it in place. Typically, a pop-out trundle bed can hold up to 250 to 500 pounds (113 to 227 kg). Many custom builders will do more than that if needed.

There is also the trundle day bed to consider. For really small apartments it is hard to have a couch and a bed at the same time. So what happens is that the platform folds up to create a full bed platform that is big enough to sleep comfortably.

Are Trundle Beds Uncomfortable?

Trundle beds are as comfortable as you want to make them! Like any bed, the execution of the design is what makes it uncomfortable, not the design itself. The first issue is form. Many lower quality trundle beds, like IKEA style ones, operate with a simple pullout platform that is narrower than the bed’s legs. These beds also have thick posts and headboards to accommodate, and a lot of clearance for the trundle. This made the pull-out section significantly smaller than the top bed. This is of course too short for the average adult.

To make it comfortable, a high-end furniture shop will have slimmer posts and headboards, as well as tighter tolerances. This translates to a pullout roughly the same length as the top mattress, making it easy to fit a full sized mattress.

This can be done for a pop-out trundle as well, creating a surface that is just as roomy as the main one.

Mattresses for Trundle Beds

Sizing for trundle bed mattresses can be tricky because of the two sleeping surfaces. One mattress can be longer than the other, or a special mattress needs to be used.

The solution is straightforward. A typical combo is to have an XL twin on the top with a normal twin on the bottom. This gives more room to the permanent bed while keeping a good size for the other one.

Custom sizing is available, but we recommend that the bottom mattress should be sized smaller than the top mattress. That way they all fit together correctly.

Aftermarket Trundles

You can buy just the pullout part of the trundle separately. There are many companies who will sell you this part. However, there are some disadvantages to this approach.

The first is sizing. Getting the right dimensions for a few trundle bed mattresses is difficult without someone with experience. Manufacturers will often give confusing dimensions for their products in industry-speak. So if you go to order something that looks like it will fit, it may not because of mattress stack height, wheel height, support length etc. It is really easy to mess this up.

The second thing is availability. It just takes more work to find one. For all those who offer this option there are a hundred others who do not. Finding a place that offers or makes this is tricky, and usually not worth your time.

The solution to both of these problems is to contact someone who knows, like a custom manufacturer. A good builder will walk you through getting the dimensions of your existing piece, as well as giving advice on the design. That way you will get a product that you like, instead of a press board monstrosity that is difficult to return or throw away.

Furniture shopping can be confusing because so many names are used for the same type of furniture. Bedroom storage is a great example – do you call it a dresser, a chest of drawers or a bureau? What about a tallboy, a highboy, or even an armoire? And what is a Chifforobe anyways? It can be overwhelming!

At Solid Custom Heirlooms we build all of these types of furniture and more – and part of the process of building custom dressers and chests is to define the terms with our customers. This article will share what we have learned over the years about bedroom storage, define the terms as we use them and explain the differences in each.

A dresser is a long, low piece of furniture with two to three columns of drawers set side by side. Each column is between 2 and 6 drawers tall. A standard dresser is waist high – about 35 inches – and dressers are typically 30 inches to 80 inches wide, depending on the width of the drawers. Standard dresser depth is 20 inches.

A dresser is often sold as a set with a matching mirror, and can include hardware to mount the mirror on the horizontal dresser top.

Bureau vs dresser vs chest of drawers

Bedroom storage is key to keeping your sleeping area neat and tidy. Bedrooms of all sizes can benefit from a set of drawers – but what are they called? Lets start with the basics. Please keep in mind that many people use these terms interchangeably, and different terms are used in different parts of the USA. Here are what we think are the most commonly used terms!

A chest of drawers, sometimes just simply called a chest, is taller and takes less floor space than a dresser, typically with one column of 4 to 6 drawers. A chest of drawers is 48 inches to 65 inches tall and has a standard depth of 20 inches.

A Gentleman’s chest, bachelor’s chest and lingerie chest are all specialized types of vertical chests with different combinations of drawers and cabinet spaces.

A bureau is very similar to a dresser but is used in a living room, library, dining room or office instead of the bedroom. A bureau may also have a roll-top or secretary desk and be 20 inches all the way up to 36 inches deep depending on it’s intended purpose.

A dresser is often called a bureau because the two pieces look and act much the same.

Dresser vs chest of drawers

Dresser and chest of drawers are terms that are used almost interchangeably, but have key differences. A dresser is long and low with multiple columns of drawers, while a chest of drawers is tall, narrow and has one column of drawers. While both a dresser and chest of drawers have a standard depth of 20 inches, it is not unusual to find dressers up to 30 inches deep and a chest of drawers with a shallower depth down to 12 or 10 inches.

Dressers and chests of drawers are often sold together as part of a bedroom set, alongside a bed frame and nightstands. The larger, wider drawers of a dresser work well for bigger clothing items and linens, while the smaller chest drawers are used for more delicate items of clothing. If you have enough room, other pieces can also be added such as a lingerie chest that has a shallow depth of 10 to 12 inches and has shorter drawers. Used together as a set, a dresser and chest can keep your bedroom organized and tidy.

Is there a difference between a bureau and a dresser?

A dresser has two to three columns of drawers and is used in the bedroom while bureau is used in other places such as a living room, office or even a library. The main difference between the two is that a dresser is used to store clothing and linens and a bureau is used for other types of items such as plates, dishes, books or office supplies.

What is the difference between a chest and a bureau?

A standard chest is a tall, vertical furniture piece with a single column of four to six drawers to provide maximum storage in a small space. A chest is an efficient piece of storage furniture for smaller bedrooms as it has a reduced footprint vs a larger double dresser.

A bureau can look like a chest of drawers but is used outside the bedroom. But, this is where the definitions get a little murky, as media chests are their own type of furniture and can be used in any room of the house!

Tallboy, highboy and lowboy

A tallboy is a piece of storage furniture with a chest of drawers on the bottom and a wardrobe on top. The term tallboy is also loosely used for any tall dresser or chest of drawers.

A highboy is a type of furniture that originated in the Victorian era, and is also known as a double chest of drawers. A highboy has one tall column of drawers, and is made up of a chest of drawers in the bottom section and a slightly smaller chest of drawers on top. It is also sometimes called a chest-on-chest.

A lowboy is the waist high bottom section of a highboy, and can be used as a stand alone piece of bedroom furniture.

How about a wardrobe, armoire or chifforobe?

A wardrobe is head-high or taller piece of furniture with split doors and a simple clothes hanger rod. Before homes had built-in closets, wardrobes were a place to store clothing and coats away from dust and especially moth damage. If you are on the hunt for Narnia, a wardrobe might be what you need!

An armoire is a wardrobe with the addition of drawers, doors and or other storage spaces. Also intended to be a replacement for or supplementary to a built-in closet, an armoire adds additional organization features to a standard wardrobe.

A chifforobe, sometimes also called a combo dresser, combines a wardrobe with a chest of drawers. Chifforobes typically feature the wardrobe on one side and the vertical chest of drawers on the other.

Is it a dresser or a chest?

What is a captains bed?

Is it better to have your bed on the floor or on a frame?

Is it bad to not have a bed frame?

Every once in a while we meet a customer that wants to “go back to the basics” and put their bed on the floor instead of using a bed frame. Sometimes it’s because they had a bad past experience with a poorly built bed, other times people are looking to save money in the short term and still others simply wonder why they need a bed frame if they have a perfectly good floor.

Despite the apparent ease of putting your mattress on the floor, there are many reasons to keep your bed frame! This is because a bed frame is not simply a statement piece. There is a reason why people over the centuries have all came back to a framed bed to sleep comfortably on. Using a bed frame is good for people, for mattresses, and for everyone who is in the bedroom.

Is it OK to put a mattress on the floor?

While it is certainly OK to put your mattress directly on the floor for a few weeks while you are moving or waiting for new furniture to arrive, there are many disadvantages of sleeping on the floor in the long term. Based on countless discussions with customers, we have learned that it is best for the sleeper and mattress longevity to use a bed frame. Let’s discuss why.

Dust and Pests

No matter how much you clean your bedroom, dust, dust mites, bed bugs, dead skin cells, and all types of vermin are on the floor. If a bed is used directly on the floor, all of these items can make their way into mattresses and clothes, making it almost impossible to keep your bedding clean.

The reason why pests flock to mattresses on the floor is because it is a great place for a bug to live. The sleeping surface traps heat underneath, providing the perfect hiding spot for bugs. Creepy crawlies in your bed are not ideal, because it decreases sleep quality. Not only bugs but dust and grime are caught there, leading to allergic reactions.

There is also mold growth and mildew growth to consider from the warm, possibly moist environment trapped against the floor.

Mattress Health

Not only is putting a bed on floor without a frame bad for the sleeper, it is bad for the mattress’s warranty. First, you may void your mattress’s warranty if you keep it on the floor. Many mattress companies, especially the makers of memory foam mattresses, will not honor their warranty if the mattress is used for an extended time on the floor.

A properly constructed platform bed is the best choice for memory foam and hybrid mattresses because it provides a strong foundation and air circulation under the mattress, keeping the warranty intact as well as helping to avoid dust, bugs and mildew growth on the underside of the bed.

Always remember that what is bad for you is bad for the mattress. Most mattresses need a proper foundation, and many mattress companies design their beds with that in mind.

Overall Comfort

There is also the overall feel of the sleeper. Hot air is often circulated from floor vents, making people feel uncomfortably warm. There is no support, so soft material like a memory foam mattresses may cause back pains that lead to other chronic pain issues. Soft mattresses, or any other mattress for that matter, are not designed with structural support in mind.

They are designed with frames implied. So they will not adequately support body weight, or help with back pain relief even if they are advertised to do so.

Heat

There is also the heat question. A hot sleeper will find that the mattress is acting like a second blanket for the floor. Heat from your body, heating vents, or pets will build up and trap heat in your body, to the point where you cannot sleep well.

Solution to the Heat

A bed frame solves both these problems by promoting air circulation and good ergonomics. Air flow flows under the mattress, so that hot sleepers can choose from thin mattresses or any other mattress type in order to get the sometimes elusive good night’s rest. A dose of cooler air is one less blanket away!

Solution to the Structure

Structurally, a bed frame supports the mattress in more ways than one. It gives support around the edges to get rid of the mushy feeling as well as giving softness to the middle of the bed. A good box spring configuration is great for your back and stomach sleepers, as well as for your body. It promotes blood circulation.

Sleeping Position

Sleeping position is also a factor when putting a mattress on the floor. Side sleepers and back sleepers will gravitate towards softer beds, while back sleepers will prefer harder ones. In either case, floor mattresses are a bad fit.

The key is that stability does not equal firmness. For the back sleeper the lack of surrounding structure will make the bed feel mushy. For the side and back sleeper, the bed on floor will seem hard, because you are stacking the filling between your body and the floor.

A bed frame solves all those problems by giving good structure to your mattress, so that all it’s potential is utilized.

Walking Through the Room

Also, we have to consider that what happens to mattress on the floor is not passive. Mattresses often get treated like a very thick, bouncy carpet. It gets stepped on by people and animals. Stuff gets spilled on them.

The longer they stay on the floor, the more dirt, grime, sweat and bacteria gather to the point where you have to get rid of the mattress, even with a mattress cover.

So in the long run, leaving a mattress on the floor does not save money because you will have to replace it sooner than having it off the floor.

The Pros of Framed Beds

Bed frames solve all of these problems. Bed frames protect from bugs and mold by lifting up the bed from the floor. They give structure and more lift with box springs.
